Update on USA Field Hockey Events, New Plan for NITQ

Updated: December 16, 2020 | 2:30 p.m. ET

With the landscape of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic ever-changing, USA Field Hockey continues to monitor the situation and provide updates on a regular basis. Below is a brief update on the events season scheduled for December through March.

National Indoor Tournament Qualifiers

Originally scheduled to take place December 19, 2020 to January 24, 2021 at sites across the country, the National Indoor Tournament Qualifiers (NITQ), presented by YOLO Sportswear, will not take place as planned but regional playing opportunities will be available at some host sites.

As some host sites are unable to accommodate indoor events per guidelines mandated by state health authorities, a few locations are willing to host teams for “practice” tournaments during the originally scheduled NITQ weekends for regional play.

Spooky Nook Sports (PA), The Training Center (PA) and Virginia Beach Field House (VA) locations have all expressed interest in hosting teams for regional “practice” tournaments during the originally scheduled NITQ weekends.

The Nittany Valley Sports Centre (PA) location has noted the possibility of hosting regional “practice” tournaments abiding state restrictions and the number of teams interested in participating.

“Practice” tournaments are not able to be held at the NITQ sites of 422 Sportsplex (PA), Heritage Hills Athletic Club (PA), Meadowbrook Athletic Center (MD), Lock Haven (PA), PA Sportsplex (PA), The Miller Center (PA) and The Rim Sports Complex (NH). Full refunds will be given to the teams that were scheduled to attend these NITQ locations.

If a team wants to participate in a regional “practice” tournament at the originally assigned NITQ location, please contact Ryan Hickey, USA Field Hockey’s Senior Events and Club Services Coordinator, at USA Field Hockey will refund $250.00 of the NITQ registration and transfer the remaining funds to the host site for the event. Teams that cannot attend due to travel restrictions or choice will receive a full NITQ refund. Teams do not need to participate in a “practice tournament” to attend the National Indoor Tournament (NIT), presented by YOLO Sportswear.

Without hosting the NITQ, USA Field Hockey will use a different approach for qualification for the U-16 and U-19 Girls divisions into the NIT. For 2021, USA Field Hockey will grant each club that registered to attend the NITQ, one team spot into the designated division at the NIT. The remaining NIT spots for the U-16 and U-19 Girls divisions will be based on the qualifying percentage between the teams entered into the NITQ and the qualified number of teams in the NIT from 2019 and 2020. For example, if a club had six teams in the U-19 Girls NITQ in 2019 and 2020 and qualified three teams to the NIT in those years, they would receive 50% allocation of the 2021 teams submitted into this year’s NITQ.

By December 8 or 9, USA Field Hockey will contact each club with the number of teams they will be allotted to enter into a U-16 and/or U-19 Girls NIT based off the statical data.

National Indoor Tournament

The 2021 National Indoor Tournament (NIT), presented by YOLO Sportswear, is still currently scheduled to take place over three weekends from February 12 to 28 at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. and Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, Va. USA Field Hockey will make a final decision on whether or not this event will happen by the middle of January. More information will be provided as soon as possible.

The qualification process for the U-16 and U-19 Girls teams has been adjusted, per above, and a waitlist will be kept should teams be unable to attend due to state health restrictions.

Disney Field Hockey Showcase

Over the past several weeks, USA Field Hockey has been closely monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and working diligently with Disney to determine if the annual sanctioned event, the Disney Field Hockey Showcase, would be able to take place as scheduled from January 29 to 31, 2021 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. After reviewing member club needs and considering projected federal, state and local travel restrictions in place to protect the health and safety of all, both organizations have decided to reschedule the Disney Field Hockey Showcase to later in the year. USA Field Hockey and Disney are focused on finding a date in May or June that will fit both organizations’ and participating clubs’ event timelines. Once a date is confirmed, this information will be shared.
