The 2020 National Hockey Festival was originally scheduled to be held at the Panama City Beach Sports Complex in Panama City Beach, Fla. Due to the uncertainties of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and concerns and challenges around health, safety and flexibility of travel, USA Field Hockey prioritized these concerns for participants over the Florida sunshine.

“Our goal for Festival is, and always has been, to provide an outstanding field hockey experience for all of our stakeholder groups, and to best serve our field hockey community,” said Simon Hoskins, USA Field Hockey’s Executive Director. “We have been in constant communication with member clubs and decided that this year, with all the uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic, moving to a location in North Carolina would help make the event more accessible and hopefully more affordable to all participants, players and families, club and college coaches, and umpires.”

USA Field Hockey chose the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex at Matthews because of its convenient location just outside of Charlotte, nine beautiful lighted turf fields and “pod” set up, making it easier to separate large groups and promote social distancing.

“We recognize that families across the country have been impacted by COVID-19, and that college coach budgets have been slashed,” said Lisa McCoy, USA Field Hockey’s Director of Futures and Programs. “Our goal in moving to North Carolina is to make Festival an option for more participants than Florida would have been this year. We are excited to be playing most of the games on turf and think Festival 2020, our 40th annual edition, will be a great and fun experience for all who attend.”

USA Field Hockey would like to thank the Panama City Beach Complex for their understanding and support through the decision-making process. The Events staff will also continue monthly communication with club administration to ensure the safest possible tournament environment.

USA Field Hockey welcomes all Member Clubs, and individuals interested in playing and/or umpiring, to register. If you have any questions, please contact Madeline Hoeppner, USA Field Hockey’s Events and Club Services Manager, at mhoeppner@usafieldhockey.com.
