FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers: Get to Know Kalinga Stadium

BHUBANESWAR, India – October 14, 2019 – Before the No. 13 U.S. Women’s National Team takes the pitch for their set FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier in Bhubaneswar, India, let’s get to know the hosting venue, Kalinga Stadium.

The foundation stone for this multi-purpose stadium was laid by former chief minister of Odisha, late Biju Patnaik, in 1978. It is located in the heart of Bhubaneswar and has facilities for basketball, field hockey, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and wall climbing. Other features include an 8-lane synthetic track, high performance centers and India’s first Olympic standard blue water-based AstroTurf.

In 2018, the field hockey stadium went through a massive renovation increasing the seating capacity from 9,000 to 15,000. Two new seating galleries were added on the North and South ends that completed enclosing the spectator views. Some modern features were also added including additional locker rooms, goalkeeper equipment rooms, umpire changing room, dining hall, conference room, media tribune and broadcaster’s room. The pitch lights were also upgraded and broadcast cameras were permanently installed.

Many notable field hockey events have been hosted at Kalinga Stadium, including the 2014 FIH Hockey Champions Trophy, 2017 FIH World League, 2018 Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup and 2019 men’s FIH Series Finals, along with the Hockey India League from 2014 to 2017.
