McPherson Joins Indoor USMNT Coaching Staff as Special Consultant

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – November 7, 2019 – USA Field Hockey is pleased to announce that Billy McPherson has joined the U.S. Men’s National Indoor Team coaching staff as a special consultant. McPherson, who previously coached the Indoor USMNT, will join alongside current head coach Alex Gheorghe in preparation for the International RohrMax Cup in Vienna, Austria and Indoor Pan American Cup in Lancaster, Pa.
“It’s a tremendous honor and a privilege to be asked to re-join the coaching staff of the U.S. Men's National Indoor Team program,” said McPherson. “I am looking forward to working with [Alex] Gheorghe and an extremely talented group of athletes at the prestigious RohrMax Cup in Vienna. The ultimate aim is the win the Indoor Pan American Cup in March in Pennsylvania.”

As an athlete, McPherson registered 152 international caps for both the Scotland National Team and Indoor National Team from 1979 to 1988 appearing in multiple European Club Championships, two European Outdoor Championships and three EuroHockey Indoor Nations Championships. In 1980, he helped Scotland claim the bronze medal at the indoor championships in Zurich, Switzerland.

He is currently a Scottish Hockey Union Level 4 coach and was a college lecturer, field hockey course leader and instructor in Scotland. His coaching experience spans nearly four decades, beginning as an indoor coach for Scotland’s U-21 team from 1985 to 1987. Next, McPherson was director of coaching with C.A. Montrouge in France from 1987 to 1989 before spending six years as coach of the Scotland Senior Men’s Team. In 1995, he went on to serve as director of coaching at Old Loughtonians hockey club in England, where he led the team to three English indoor championships, a bronze medal in the European indoor B Division and a fourth place finish at the indoor A Division, the highest position achieved by any English club team.

After serving one year as the coach of Stade Francaise Hockey Club in France, McPherson was named coach of the U.S. Men’s National Indoor Team, a position he held from 1999 to 2003. In 2002, he led USA to a second-place finish at first Indoor Pan American Championship in Rockville, Md. McPherson also led the team to their first qualification for the Indoor Hockey World Cup in 2003.

“We are all very excited to participate in the RohrMax tournament in Vienna, this will give us some great competition to get prepared prior to the Pan American Cup,” added Gheorghe. “I am looking forward to working together with Coach McPherson. With his extensive coaching experience, this is certainly a great addition to our program.”
