2019 YWNC: Day 1 Review

June 14, 2019, 8:14 p.m. (ET)

The first day of competition at the 2019 Young Women's National Championship (YWNC) taking place at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. has come to a close. Below is a recap of each game played.

Freedom 1 - 0 Patriots
On the outside field, the YWNC got underway with a hotly contested Pool A game between Freedom and Patriots. Both teams created chances with the penalty corner count tipping in favor of Freedom. Ultimately it would be a penalty corner that would be the difference as Taylor Blood (Hampton Falls, N.Y.) capitalized on a trappers dream, an off-target insert, to finish from the the top of the circle with 7 minutes remaining. Patriots earned themselves a penalty corner to give themselves a chance to get back into the game but were unable to execute and Freedom wrapped up the 1-0 win.

USA U-19 4 - 1 Pride
In the opening Pool B game, the USA U-19 team started on the front foot, pressing aggressively as a team and forcing turnovers. The high pressure paid off as they ran in three unanswered goals in the first half with Paityn Wirth (Thompsontown, Pa.) finishing off a nice counter attack for the first. Charlotte De Vries (Wayne, Pa.) added another finding the top corner before Maddie Zimmer (Hershey, Pa.) connected with Grace Wallis (Blue Bell, Pa.) for the third. The USA U-19 team continued to be in the ascendancy as the second half got underway but it would take until the third quarter before De Vries added her second and the team's fourth goal of the match. Pride was able to claw one back as the game wound down when Allison Bitting (Hummelstown, Pa.) finished high into the net after a series of rebounds from a penalty corner.

Courage 2 - 3 Honor
The most back and forward game of the day saw Courage take an early lead through one of the newest U.S. Women’s National Team additions, Virginia Bramley, (Elizabethtown, Pa.) who smashed home a volley after 5 minutes. Honor had chances to even things up before halftime as they had three penalty corners as time expired but they were unable to capitalize. Courage extended their lead through a Corinne Zanolli (Newtown Square, Pa.) drag flick. In the end two would not be enough as Honor roared back with a goal from Margot Lawn (Pasadena, Md.) and two goals from Mackenzie Keegan (Delran, N.J.), the first a well timed deflection into the top corner, as they went on to win 3-2.

Spirit 3 - 1 Dream
In the second game in Pool B, Spirit made their penalty corners count as first Emma Bozek (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and Mikayla Michels (Needham, Mass.) found the back of the net. Bozek's was a straight strike and Michels had a well taken rebound effort. The two penalty corner goals were enough to see Spirit take the lead into the halftime break. In the third quarter, Dream started to find their rhythm and Miranda Rigg (Rutherglen, Va.) produced a contender for goal of the day with a sublime backhand that flashed over the goalkeeper's shoulder. It was not long before Spirit put the game to bed as Greer Gill (Virginia Beach, Va.) turned the ball over on the press, beat one and finished clinically from the top of the circle.
