USA Field Hockey’s Level 2 Instructional Coaching Clinic is a 14-hour offering that will be held on Saturday, February 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, February 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Jenison Field House at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. This course will expand on several of the topics covered in the Level 1 Clinic and will challenge participants to further define and evaluate their individual coaching philosophies, styles, techniques and encourage self-assessment.  Additionally, coaches will work in groups to share best practices and receive peer feedback in a comfortable and encouraging environment.


The Level 2 Instructional Coaching Clinic will cover the following topics: 

Classroom Presentations and Discussions

  • Developing Your Coaching Philosophy 
  • Teaching Games for Understanding & Guided Discovery/Learning Principles
  • 11 v 11 Concepts/Formations
  • Effective Session Planning
  • Collaborating with Others to Provide Solutions to Strategic Challenges
  • Participate in On-Field Group Presentations Covering Important Coaching Topics


On-Field Learning and Application 

  • Participate in Group Presentations Covering Important Coaching Topics   
  • Apply “Teaching Games for Understanding” Principles that include Exercise Progressions  
  • Skill Acquisition - Error Detection and Correction  
  • Design Fun and Effective Training Sessions - Small Games

Participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and space is limited.

USA Field Hockey Level 2 Instructional Clinic attendees will receive a Level 2 Certificate of Participation and, with a USA Field Hockey Membership, will be eligible to coach in USA Field Hockey programs including becoming a head coach of Futures and Junior Olympic Games (application process). Participants will also be able to advance further as we continue to expand offerings within USA Field Hockey’s Coach Education Program.

Instructors of this Level 2 Instructional Coaching Clinic:

Craig Parnham | USA Field Hockey’s Director of Coach Education & Learning

Parnham is a five-time Olympian. He played in both the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games for Great Britain, coached Great Britain in the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games, and the United States in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. In total, Parnham has coached professionally for more than 20 years and is a qualified Level 4 Coach. He holds a post-graduate diploma in Elite Coaching Practice.



Tamara Durante | Level 2 Coach Educator | Focus Field Hockey Coach

Durante has been involved with USA Field Hockey programming for years. She attended the first-ever Coach Educator Training last December and was assigned to mentor coaches at the Junior Olympics, in 2016. Durante served as assistant coach for the U.S. U-21 Women's National Team at the Junior Pan American Games in 2008 and has coached in the Futures Program since 2002. She continues to be involved as a selector for Futures and the U.S. U-17 Women's National Team.

Durante is currently the Associate Head Coach at Michigan State University. Before that, she served ten seasons at Yale University as an assistant coach and associate head coach.
