The 2018 NIT Champions are returning to defend their title, DC Dragons for the men and Boston FHC for the women. All participating teams have been preparing in various ways like competing in local leagues, against local clubs and in tournaments. The men's East Coast High Performance (ECHP) manager noted that they are inspired to win this year, as they finished second last year on goal differential.

The team rosters are diverse and include top talent. Triangle FHC has athletes from five different countries with brothers that play for the Puerto Rican Men's National Team. ECHP is in USA Field Hockey's men's pipeline and is one of the high performance centers. The Marojoka women includes alumni from three different decades, while the women's Boston FHC team plans to defend their title with former indoor national team athletes from the United States and Canada. Games will be packed with action and it will expose the youth in attendance a high level of play and what adult club opportunities are available for those to continue their field hockey playing career.

This year's NIT has the highest adult team registration for both the men and women, along with a waitlist, indicating there is a growing demand for adult indoor competition. USA Field Hockey is working closely with the United States Field Hockey League (USFHL) to continue to provide and aid in those opportunities for adults. The goal is to build out a competitive national structure which also provides local competitive options for adults.
