COLOGNE, Germany - April 21, 2019 - In their final game of their Germany tour, the U.S. U-17 Women's National Team came away with a 1-1 draw against the Belgium U-16 squad in Cologne, Germany. The match proved to be USA's most dominant performance to date in terms of time of possession, although they were unable to convert on a number of chances in the attacking end.

The game got off to a fast start for USA, with their strikers peppering Belgium's goalkeeper with a number of shots in the first five minutes. Unwavering in their baseline attack, USA drew a pair of penalty corners but just missed on a handful of cross balls. They were rewarded for their attacking persistence late in the first quarter when Ashley Sessa (Schwenksville, Pa.) weaved through numerous defenders and ripped a backhand shot into the net. Belgium responded in the second quarter with a goal of their own. On their lone score of the match, Belgium hit to the near side where their inserter put away the rebound.

Adjustments to USA's high press and an unyielding work rate led to further dominance in the second half as the red, white and blue produced a number of additional scoring threats. Twice it appeared they had taken the lead on goals from Makenna Webster (St. Louis, Mo.) and Hannah Maxwell (Forty Fort, Pa.) but on both occasions the goals were disallowed by the officials. Meanwhile, the defensive unit led by goalkeepers Annabel Skubisz (Houston, Texas) and Caylie McMahon (Stow, Mass.), as well as defenders Lee Ann Gordon (Louisville, Ky.), Sarah Beers (Fleetwood, Pa.), Zoe Campisi (Virginia Beach, Va.), and Lauren Hunter (Elizabethtown, Pa.) was extremely composed. Belgium had very few chances to score as USA's defense organized wonderfully and smothered any counter attack opportunities.

Despite the game ending in a 1-1 tie, USA returns home on a high note after putting together their best overall performance of the tournament. Up next for the U.S. U-17 Women's National Team is a training camp at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. from May 10 to 12.
