USA Field Hockey’s Level 1 Instructional Clinic is an 8-hour offering and will be held at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. On Saturday, March 10 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m ET. This Level 1 is specifically designed for individuals with a basic knowledge and understanding of the game of field hockey.  Individuals who are brand new to the sport are welcome to attend, but may find it difficult as the course covers a broad range of topics in a short period of time.  This Level 1 clinic is the perfect opportunity for professional development and local networking. 

The Level 1 Instructional Coaching Clinic will cover the following topics: 

Classroom Presentations and Discussions  

  • Importance of Coaching Philosophy
  • Coaching as a Profession - How to Coach Principles
  • Learning & Age-Appropriate Development Principles   
  • Introduction to “Teaching Games for Understanding” 

On-Field Learning & Application 

  • Basic Rules & Field Set-Up   
  • Fundamental Skills of Field Hockey - Grip Management   
  • Introduction to Attack and Defense Principles - Small Games  
  • The Basics of Goalkeeping  
  • Designing Fun and Effective Training Sessions

Participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and space is limited.

Upon completion of the course, all participants will receive their Level 1 Coaching Certification. This certification will remain valid as long as your USA Field Hockey Coach Membership remains current. Certification will lapse without a current membership. Coaches interested in working in USA Field Hockey's Futures Program must have a Level 1 Certification and a current USA Field Hockey Coach Membership to be eligible to apply.

Carolyn King Robitaille | Saint Anselm College Head Coach | Level 1 Head Coach Educator

Last season in 2016, Carolyn King Robitaille led the Saint Anselm Hawks to a 17-5 overall mark, the highest win total in program history. Saint Anselm also won their first ever Northeast-10 Regular Season Championship and earned their first berth in the NCAA Tournament, eventually falling in overtime in the semifinal game. For her efforts, Robitaille earned Northeast-10 Coach of the Year honors and NFHCA East Region Coach of the Year.

Robitaille has coached four NFHCA All-Americans, four First Team All-NE-10 choices, eight Second Team All-NE-10 choices, four NE-10 All-Rookie players, 26 NFHCA All-Academic honorees and three NE-10 All-Academic winners in her time at Saint Anselm. Her team also has a 100 percent graduation rate for four-year players.

Robitaille, a native of Hanover, Mass., arrived on the Hilltop after serving the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at SUNY Cortland. Prior to joining Cortland, Robitaille was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Bates College for three seasons and she also served as an assistant softball coach.

Robitaille holds a USA Field Hockey Level 2 Coaching Certification and is the site director for the Futures Program site held at Saint Anselm. Robitaille has also served as head coach of the Granite State Elite club team.

Robitaille was a four-year varsity field hockey forward at Bates from 2003-06 and also played catcher for the softball team. Internationally, Robitaille suited up in South Africa as an independent player in 2006, played in Holland that same year as a member of the Bates squad and traveled to Argentina as a member of the Bates coaching staff in 2009. In 2015, she brought her Saint Anselm team to Ireland to compete against clubs in the greater Dublin area.

She is currently the NE-10 field hockey coaches' chair and is an active member of the NFHCA, USA Field Hockey and the Alliance of Women Coaches (NCAA Women Coaches Academy – Class 39).

Robitaille received her Bachelor's Degree in English from Bates in 2007 and then obtained her Master's Degree in English from Cortland in 2012.  

Julie Munson | Southern New Hampshire University Head Coach | Level 1 Coach Educator

Julie Munson is the head field hockey coach at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) where she helped re-start the program in 2014. The program was previously a school sponsored team from 1977-81.

Prior to starting the field hockey program at SNHU, Munson served as an assistant coach at Harvard University for three years and James Madison University for six seasons. She played collegiately at the University of New Hampshire as a goalkeeper.

Munson has helped coach within USA Field Hockey's Futures Program as both a goalkeeper coach and field player coach. She also was a selector for the Regional Futures Tournaments and National Futures Championship as well as coached teams at the National Futures Championship. Munson has also been an assistant coach for High Performance program.
