This Level 1 is specifically designed for individuals with a basic knowledge and understanding of the game of field hockey. Individuals who are brand new to the sport are welcome to attend, but may find it difficult as the course covers a broad range of topics in a short period of time. This Level 1 Clinic is the perfect opportunity for professional development and local networking. 

The Level 1 Instructional Coaching Clinic will cover the following topics:

Classroom Presentations and Discussions:

  • The Importance of Coaching Philosophy 
  • Coaching as a Profession: How to Coach Principles 
  • Learning & Age-Appropriate Development Principles
  • Introduction to “Teaching Games for Understanding”   

On-Field Learning & Application:

  • Basic Rules and Field Set Up 
  • Fundamental Skills of Field Hockey – Grip Management 
  • Introduction to Attack and Defense Principles – Small Games 
  • The Basics of Goalkeeping 
  • Designing Fun and Effective Training Sessions

Instructors for this Level 1 Instructional Coaching Clinic:

Stacey Bean | Virginia Commonwealth University Head Coach | Level 1 Head Instructor

Level 1 Course Head Instructor Bean has coached within the USA Field Hockey system for many years. She has experience working with a variety teams at the National Futures Championships and in addition has been Head Coach for the Junior Regional High-Performance Program. Bean a four-time finalist for national Coach of the Year awards, has won seven conference Coach of the Year honors.

Bean earned her bachelor's degree in physical and health education at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, graduating with honors. She has been a Level 3 certified field hockey coach since 1994, graduated from the NCAA women's coaching academy in 2005 and completed the NCAA Women's Coaching Academy Dimension 2 Program in 2010.

USA Field Hockey’s Level 2 Instructional Coaching Clinic is a 14-hour offering, that will be held on Sunday, November 26 from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Monday, November 27 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This course will expand on several of the topics covered in the Level 1 Clinic and will challenge participants to further define and evaluate their individual coaching philosophies, styles, techniques and encourage self-assessment. Additionally, coaches will work in groups to share best practice and receive peer feedback in a comfortable and encouraging environment.

The Level 2 Instructional Coaching Clinic will cover the following topics:   

Classroom Presentations and Discussions:

  • Developing Your Coaching Philosophy
  • Teaching Games for Understanding & Guided Discovery/Learning Principles
  • 11 v 11 Concepts/Formations
  • Effective Session Planning
  • Collaborating with Others to Provide Solutions to Strategic Challenges
  • Participate in On-Field Group Presentations Covering Important Coaching Topics 

On-Field Learning and Application:

  • Participate in Group Presentations Covering Important Coaching Topics
  • Apply “Teaching Games for Understanding” Principles that include Exercise Progressions
  • Skill Acquisition - Error Detection and Correction
  • Design Fun and Effective Training Sessions - Small Games

Instructor of this Level 2 Instructional Coaching Clinic:

Craig Parnham | USA Field Hockey’s Director of Coach Education and Learning | Level 2 Instructor

Parnham was appointed to the role of head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team in January 2013. Through his determined leadership, Parnham guided the team to their best Hero FIH World Ranking in USWNT national team history of 5th and most recently propelled the international squad to a 5th place finish at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Among his collection of other noteworthy accomplishments, he won gold medals at the 2015 Pan American Games and 2014 Champions Challenge, claimed fourth place at the 2014 Rabobank World Cup and made the USWNT an international threat on the pitch. From the first day of his appointment, he has been in instrumental to USWNT's successes.

In January 2017, Parnham stepped into a new role as USA Field Hockey's Director of Coach Education and Learning. He is passionate about coach education and coaching as a profession. He believes that sustainable player pathways are underpinned by robust Coach Education programs. 

Parnham has competed in both the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games and coached in three, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games. He has been coaching professionally for more than 20 years and is a qualified Level 4 Coach and holds a post-graduate diploma in Elite Coaching Practice.
