COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - November 9, 2017 - USA Field Hockey invites Level 2 and higher Coach Members to attend the 4th annual National Coaches Forum at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa., Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9, 2017. Please join us at this great event to network with and be inspired by top experts in the field of coaching and teaching. This week, we highlight one of our main presenters, U.S. Men’s National Team Head Coach Rutger Wiese.

Wiese was announced as the U.S. Men’s National Team Head Coach in January of this year. He has the responsibility and privilege of developing a robust pathway for talented male athletes in the United States to contend at the international level. Recently, the USMNT performed exceptionally under Wiese, capturing bronze medals at both the FIH Hockey World League Round 2 in Trinidad and Tobago and men's Pan American Cup in Lancaster, Pa.

Wiese has been an assistant coach with the U.S. Men’s National Team since 2013 and was part of the coaching staff when the team won the FIH Hockey World League Round 1 in Salamanca, Mexico in September 2016. He is also the head coach of the U.S. U-21 Men’s National Team. Under his direction, the team finished fourth at the Junior Men’s Pan American Championship in May 2016.

Wiese held previous coaching roles in collegiate Division I and II programs. He served as an assistant coach at Harvard University for four seasons (2012-2015), and was the head coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for more than six seasons (2003-2009).

As a player, Wiese has a wealth of international experience. He played as a defender at H.C. Bloemendaal, a major-league team in his native, The Netherlands. With Bloemendaal, he won three Netherlands National Championships (1999, 2000, 2002), a European championship (2001) and a European silver medal (2000). In 2010, he won the Scottish national indoor championship with Menzieshill H.C.

Presentation Title: “Transitions in Coaching”
Wiese became the head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team in January 2017. Though he was involved with the program prior to taking on his new role, being the head coach involves different thinking and provides an opportunity to shift the focus and culture. Wiese will speak to the group about his transition, sharing the principles he is applying and the tactics he is using in an effort to take the USMNT to the next level.

Space is limited for the 2017 National Coaches Forum. Please email Liz Tchou, USA Field Hockey's Senior Manager of Coach Education, at ltchou@usafieldhockey.com if you have any questions.
