The game of field hockey has changed significantly during the past decade. The introduction of synthetic turf and continual innovations have sped up the game, inspiring new tactics, techniques and rules to accommodate the faster play. Whether you coach players on grass, filled-turf, or water -based turf, teaching these new skills properly, and in a fun and engaging way, will enable you and your team to develop and succeed.

Level 1 Instructional Coaching Clinics are:

  • Specifically designed to enhance a coach's basic knowledge and understanding of the game of field hockey and best practices on how to teach them.
  • A perfect opportunity for professional development and collaboration with your peers and your local field hockey community
  • Designed for individuals with a basic knowledge and understanding of the game of field hockey. Individuals who are brand new to the sport are welcome to attend, but may find it difficult as the course covers a broad range of topics in a short period of time. 
  • Recommended for new and experienced coaches, even those who attained their Level 1 Certificate years ago. 

All participants will receive a USA Field Hockey Level 1 Coaching Certificate and will be eligible to attend a Level 2 Instructional Coaching Clinic for more in depth technical and tactical learning. Level 1 Certified Coaches with current USA Field Hockey Coaching Memberships are eligible to apply for coaching positions within USA Field Hockey's programming, including Futures.

The Level 1 Instructional Clinic is an 8-hour course and will cover the following topics:

Classroom Presentations and Discussions:

  • The Importance of Coaching Philosophy 
  • Coaching as a Profession: How to Coach Principles 

  • Appropriate Development Principles – Spatial Awareness 

  • Introduction to “Teaching Games for Understanding”   

On-Field Learning & Application:

  • Basic Rules and Field Set Up 
  • Fundamental Skills of Field Hockey – Grip Management 

  • Introduction to Attack and Defense Principles – Small Games 

  • The Basics of Goalkeeping 

  • Designing Fun and Effective Training Sessions

Julie Munson | Southern New Hampshire University Head Coach | Level 1 Coach Educator

Julie Munson is the head field hockey coach at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) where she helped re-start the program in 2014. The program was previously a school sponsored team from 1977-81.

Prior to starting the field hockey program at SNHU, Munson served as an assistant coach at Harvard University for three years and James Madison University for six seasons. She played collegiately at the University of New Hampshire as a goalkeeper.

Munson has helped coach within USA Field Hockey's Futures Program as both a goalkeeper coach and field player coach. She also was a selector for the Regional Futures Tournaments and National Futures Championship as well as coached teams at the National Futures Championship. Munson has also been an assistant coach for High Performance program.


Lindsay Jackson | College of The Holy Cross Head Coach | Level 1 Coach Educator


Lindsay Jackson is in her second season as the head coach of the College of The Holy Cross field hockey program. Jackson, who is the fifth head coach in program history, came to Holy Cross from Limestone College where she served as the head coach since 2008.


Prior to her time at Limestone, where she also served as the senior women’s administrator since 2010, Jackson had previous coaching experience at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach for two seasons from 2007-2008. She also coached at the USA Field Hockey's Futures Program in the spring of 2012 and 2013. Jackson got her coaching start in 2006, where she was an assistant field hockey coach at Southern High School in Harwood, Md.


Jackson attended Mercyhurst University, where she played both field hockey and lacrosse. She earned All-Academic accolades during every field hockey and lacrosse seasons and was named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coach Association (IWLCA) Division II Academic Honor Roll four times. Jackson also participated in the North vs. South field hockey and lacrosse All-Star games during her senior season.


Jackson graduated from Mercyhurst in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Management. She earned her master’s degree in Coaching Education from Ohio University in 2013.
