COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Field Hockey is pleased to welcome three new members to the Board of Directors as well as three returning members, each of whom will serve through 2020. The full USA Field Hockey Board is comprised of 12 members who govern the organization.
New additions to the board in 2017 will be three-time Olympian Lauren Crandall, top-level New England Umpire Jeanne O'Brien and Asset Conversions Owner Dr. Kathy Schiller. Returning for another term is former U.S. Men's National Team Captain Shawn Hindy, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Director of Championship and Alliance Roberta Page and U.S. Men's Masters Team member and high school Coach Richard Hayden.
The athlete members elected as the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Athletes’ Advisory Council (AAC) Representative and Alternate are two former Team USA athletes, Hindy and Crandall.
Hindy was a member of the U.S. Men's National Team from 1995-2007 and competed in more than 60 international matches for the U.S. as well as captained the team from 2001-2004. He was named the USOC ACC Representative when he joined the Board in 2013 and has been the Chairman of the Board since 2015. He owns the club team First Class Field Hockey and is the head field hockey coach at The Oakridge School in Arlington, Texas.
Crandall is a Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympian and former captain of the U.S. Women's National Team before announcing her retirement earlier this month. She has competed in 279 international matches for Team USA while winning many prestigious competitions along the way. She will serve as the USOC ACC Alternate.
“I am honored to be elected to the Board by my peers," said Crandall. "I greatly look forward to representing our men and women athletes' interests on the Board and will do my best to make them proud. Having been an athlete for the last 11 years, I know how important it is for athletes to feel connected to their organization and to know their interests are being represented and heard. I am excited to serve them and to serve the organization that has given me so much!”
Coach Representative Hayden has been involved with field hockey for 40 years. He has helped with many USA Field Hockey programs and events, and this year he led a new high school program in Loudoun, Va. He still plays field hockey with dcDragons and represented the red, white and blue in the Master's World Cup in Rotterdam in 2014 as a member of the U.S. O-50 Men’s Masters Team. He has also umpired at the collegiate, high school and club levels. When he is not around hockey he is the Senior Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at Unanet. Hayden has served on the Board as the Coach Representative since January 2016.
O’Brien will serve as the Umpire Director on the USA Field Hockey Board. She has been a volunteer for USA Field Hockey for more than 30 years in many capacities and has been serving as the Regional Umpire Coordinator in the Northeast Region since the position was created, and recruited and trained umpires in her region prior to that position. When she is not volunteering at USA Field Hockey events, O'Brien is umpiring at the NCAA Level.
Independent Director, Schiller, joins the board with a wealth of marketing, business development and management knowledge. Graduating from John Hopkins University with her Ph.D. in Chronic Disease Epidemiology, Schiller has worked in many different industries in Virginia and Maryland. Her interest in hockey stems from her three children who have all played the sport in various capacities. She is the East Coast High Performance Center volunteer coordinator and she is also a board member of the Boys Field Hockey Hub.
The Director for Championships and Alliances for NCAA Division II, Page will serve as the Amateur Sports Organization Representative. Prior to her role with the NCAA, she was the Director of Athletics at Shippensburg University.
"We welcome Lauren, Jeanne and Kathy and welcome back Shawn, Richard and Roberta to the Board, volunteering in this capacity is a great way to give back and to serve the sport," said Simon Hoskins, USA Field Hockey's Executive Director. "I would like to send an extended thank you to Simon Gray, Jamie Montgomery and Rene' Zelkin for their service on the Board of Directors. The organization is truly grateful for their support of the sport and of USA Field Hockey."
