RICHMOND, VIRGINIA – The 2011 National Indoor Tournament for Under-19 Girls and Under-20 Boys presented by Yolo Sportswear and held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, VA wrapped up yesterday evening after three days of exciting competition. One hundred and twenty four teams traveled to the Richmond area for the weekend long event and participated in a combined total of 868 field hockey matches. An estimated 1,300 athletes and families filled hotels, restaurants and shopping centers throughout the weekend.

“The event ran smoothly and overall I think experience was enjoyable for all,” said Karen Collins, Director of Event Logistics at USA Field Hockey. “We are looking forward to working with the Greater Richmond Convention Center to host next year’s event and anticipate another great event coming up in Virginia Beach for the Under-14 and Under-16 Tournament.”

According to JBS Destination Solutions, USA Field Hockey’s Official Housing Service, approximately thirty hotels were used to house field hockey athletes, parents and staff, with roughly 2,200 room nights booked. The economic impact on a city is generally substantial when hosting an event of this magnitude.

"It was great to have USA Field Hockey back in the Richmond Region,” said Michael Meyers, General Manager of the Greater Richmond Convention Center. “We have been excited to watch the sport grow in recent years and we are proud to be one of the larger host sites that can help the sport and the events grow further. We look forward to the partnership we have in place for 2012 and we hope to be part of the schedule for many years to come.”
