USA Field Hockey Holds Junior High Performance Training Camp

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – USA Field Hockey’s Under-17 and Under-21 Women’s Junior National Teams were at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, January 13-16, for a training camp to kick off the 2011 season. The squads that were selected at the Junior National Camp last year, came together for the first time over the weekend.
Most of the forty-five female athletes in attendance abandoned the snow and ice in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast for the sunshine and warmth of Southern California. The athletes participated in multiple on field trainings as well as video sessions to emulate the training environment the Women’s National Team performs.

Junior National Team Coaches, Ainslee Lamb, Andrew Griffith and Diane Madl were at the helm of the U21 squad while Shellie Onstead, Tracey Fuchs and Pam Stuper lead the U17 group.  Zowie Tucker was on hand to assist both groups in their goalkeeping sessions.  USA Field Hockey’s High Performance staff, Terry Walsh, Lee Bodimeade and Nick Conway were also available to lend a stick and hand for the training sessions.
The training camp allowed the young athletes to better understand the National Teams training program and get a feel for life at the Olympic Training Center. Both the Under-17 and Under-21 Teams will meet again, on the East Coast, for another training camp before traveling overseas for international competition, this Spring.
The Under-17 Junior National Team will head to Holland to play in the DOMO International Easter Tournament.  The Under-21 Junior National Team will also head  to Europe for some international competition later this Spring.
