Meeting virtually for the first time of the year, the Executive Board of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) decided that the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup, which was initially scheduled to be played in December 2021 but had to be put “on hold” due to the Omicron variant outbreak, will be staged from April 2 to 13, 2022 at the originally planned venue, the North-West University of Potchefstroom in South Africa. Following the outbreak of a new coronavirus variant in South Africa, the International Hockey Federation (FIH), South African Hockey Association and North-West University of Potchefstroom have jointly decided that the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup South Africa 2021, initially planned in Potchefstroom from December 5 to 16, will not happen under these circumstances. Venue

The North-West University (NWU) is a major factor for the city’s status as “city of expertise”, however it also underpins it being recognized as the North West Province’s “Home of Sports” having already hosted both national and international sporting events. It also features the High Performance Institute of Sport on its campus making Potchefstroom the preferred training venue for sport teams and individuals from all around the world as they profit from excellent training facilities, the altitude, sports medical and scientific services as well as the hospitality and good weather.

The NWU Hockey Academy boasts to be one of the best hockey facilities in South Africa, with an array of excellent services and expertise. It features two side-by-side water based synthetic turfs which have been relaid in 2019 with blue Greenfield TX Elite synthetic carpets that have FIH certification – both pitches are also floodlit. Many successful hockey teams such as Germany, Spain, Belgium and France have already used NWU Hockey Academy’s facilities for their training camps and matches; and it has also played host to a 5 Nations International Tournament

With excellent facilities in place and further upgrades being made prior to the event, teams and athletes will profit also from the close proximity, providing training, matches, services and accommodation all within a 800m x 800m location.

Potchefstroom

Potchefstroom, situated approx. 120 km west-southwest of Johannesburg, is an academic city that also features excellent sports facilities that attract over 2,000 international athletes yearly with many of them appreciating the friendliness and hospitality of the city’s residents.

Potchefstroom has not only hosted two World Cup winning teams (in cricket and football), but was also the venue for some Cricket World Cup and Cricket World Cup Qualifier matches. Noted local athletes include Godfrey Khotso Mokoena, silver medallist in the long jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Apart from its sporting features though, Potchefstroom has a rich history and houses several memorial sites and tourist attractions, with other tourist attractions and world heritage sites within the near vicinity of the city. This includes beautiful places and interesting spots such as the Snowflake Silo building, O. P. M. Prozesky Bird Sanctuary, MooiRivier Mall or Boskop Dam Nature Reserve among the many more things to discover.
