USA Diving To Hold Elections For Board Of Directors and Committee Positions

USA Diving will be conducting 2020 elections for six positions on its Board of Directors, as well as positions on the Committee for Competitive Excellence and the new Coaches Advisory Committee, in November. All voting will be done electronically.


In consultation with the USOPC, USA Diving revised its bylaws in March, 2020, and several changes affect the composition of the Board of Directors and various committees, as well as who is eligible to vote in USA Diving elections.

 

Previously, each Local Diving Association received four votes and other individuals received at-large votes for serving on committees or in other capacities. Now, all voting will be based on membership. For example, coach members and competition coach members will be eligible to vote for coach positions.

 

The new board composition will consist of 15 directors, including eight unaffiliated directors (an increase of four) and one allied organizations director. Two coach directors (up from one), one at-large director and three athlete directors will be elected.

 

Nominations will be accepted through November 1. Candidates interested in running should complete a nominee information form and conflict of interest statement and return to elections@usadiving.org. Questions should be directed to this email as well.

 

Eligible voters will be notified by a separate email and will also receive candidate information prior to voting opening on November 16.  If you think you are eligible and do not receive voting information by this date, please contact elections@usadiving.org. Voting will close at 5 p.m. ET on November 20.

 

Board Positions:

 

Coach Directors:

Two coach directors will be elected. The candidate with the most votes will serve a four-year term, and the candidate with the second-most votes will serve a two-year term.

 

Who can serve: Only those coach members and competition coach members who, at the time of the election, are currently coaching one or more active athlete members of the corporation and have current memberships are eligible to be a coach director.

 

Who can vote: All coach members and competition coach members (as of October 16) will be eligible to vote. If a membership is in progress, the member will be permitted to vote this year. Moving forward, a coach member or competition member must have completed all membership requirements in order to vote.

 

At-Large Director:


One at-large director will be elected to a two-year term. A candidate must receive a majority of the votes to be elected. If there are more than two candidates, voters will be asked to rank the candidates the Borda rule determines the winner.

 

Who can serve: Current members, including lifetime members, who are not registered in an athlete or coach membership category (as of October 16)

Athlete Directors:

 

Eligible athletes will be electing a USOPC Athletes’ Advisory Council Representative as well as two additional athlete directors to the board.

 

Who can serve: To serve as an athlete director, an athlete must have represented the U.S. at an Olympic Games, Pan American Games or other Operation Gold event in the past 10 years or have finished in the top half of a national championship in the past 24 months. Only athletes who meet the first (10-year) requirement are eligible to serve as the USOPC AAC Rep.

 

Who can vote: Athletes who meet the eligibility requirements to serve in one of the athlete positions will be eligible to vote for those positions.

Committee positions

 

Under the revised bylaws, many committee positions will now be appointed directly by the board. These committees include the Board of Review, the Finance and Audit Committee, the Ethics Committee, and the Nominating and Elections Committee.

 

Committees that will have elected members are the Coaches Advisory Council and the Committee for Competitive Excellence.

 

Committee for Competitive Excellence: Three positions will be elected in November. These positions will be elected by all members in good standing.

 

CCE Chair: Candidates must have been a coach, team leader, FINA international Diving judge or High-Performance Director at an Olympics/World Cup/World Championship Diving event, and/or a FINA judge at a World Series event within the previous three (3) Olympic cycles. This position will be elected to a four-year term.

 

Junior Elite Coach Representative: Candidates must have coached a medalist at a Junior Pan American Championships or a finalist (top 12) at the World Junior Championships or had an athlete at the Youth Olympic Games within the last three Olympic cycles. This position will serve a four-year term.

 

Senior Elite Coach Representative: Candidate must have coached at Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup or Pan American Games within the last three Olympic cycles. This position will be elected to a two-year term in 2020 and to a four-year term beginning in 2022.

 

Note: The International Diving Representative and At-Large Representative will next be elected in 2022. Matt Scoggin and Drew Johansen were elected to four-year terms in those positions under the former bylaws in 2018.

  

Coaches Advisory Council: Five coaches will be elected to the new committee. Current coach members and competition coach members are eligible to serve. The top-two vote-getters will be elected to a four-year term. The next three will serve a two-year term. Hereafter, all terms will be a four-year term.

 

Who can vote: All coach members and competition coach members are eligible to vote for these positions.
