KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – Juliet Radich (Fort Lauderdale Diving Team) and Mitchell Caldwell (American Flyers Diving) won the first two titles of the 2019 USA Diving Junior National Championships with victories in 11-and-under girls’ platform and boys’ 1-meter on Tuesday.
Radich won the platform title 206.80 points, including 55.90 points on her inward double somersault. Kenadie Helmboldt (City of Midland Aquatics) scored 197.70 points for the silver medal, and Kayla Jensen (The Woodlands Diving Academy) won bronze with 182.95 points.
“It feels great. It was my dream. This is my last year as an 11-and-under, so it feels really good. I feel like my last inward double was the best one I’ve ever done, so I’m really happy about that,” Radich said.
Caldwell picked up the 1-meter win with 212.50 points, including 44 points on his front double somersault. Landyn Snook (West Chester Diving) won silver with 204.00 points, and Max Van Stone (Clayton Diving Alliance) finished with 197.50 points for bronze.
“I feel really happy. It’s my last year as an 11-and-under. I was happy with my optionals. I was focusing on my starts a lot, and I hit them,” Caldwell said.
The USA Diving Junior National Championships also serve as the selection event for the Junior Pan American Championships. Divers who win junior national titles in Olympic events will be selected to the team, and Radich’s victory secured her spot on the team. The Junior Pan American Championships will be held August 22-25 in Santiago, Chile.
The USA Diving Junior Nationals Championships continue through August 6. National champions in 11-and-under boys’ platform and girls’ 3-meter will be crowned Wednesday.
