World University Games Continue With Two Synchro Finals, Individual 3-Meter Prelims

The World University Games continued with two synchronized finals and women’s 3-meter preliminaries on Friday, the fourth day of competition in Naples, Italy.

In mixed synchronized 3-meter action, Jacob Cornish (Honolulu, Hawaii/Austin, Texas) and Meghan O’Brien (Concord, Mass./Austin, Texas) finished fourth with 262.14 points, 17.31 points behind bronze medalists Carolina Mendoza and Adan Zuniga of Mexico. China’s Wu Chunting and Hu Zijie were first at 301.38.

Jacob Fielding (Los Angeles/Ohio State University) and Jacob Siler (Knoxville, Tenn./Ohio State University) paired together for 317.70 points and a seventh-place finish in men’s synchronized platform. China’s Cao Lizhi and Huang Zigan took gold with 431.16 points.

Lauren Reedy (Rochester Hills, Mich./University of Missouri) and Carolina Sculti (Rye, N.Y/Stanford University) advanced to Saturday’s women’s 3-meter semifinals with solid performances in the preliminaries on Friday. Reedy scored 265.70 to place third, 0.55 points behind Italy’s Laura Bilotta. Sculti wasn’t far behind in fifth after finishing with 257.90 points. Emily Bretscher (Knoxville, Tenn./Purdue University) was seventh with 248.85 points in the preliminaries but could not advance to the semifinals as only two divers per federation are permitted to move forward.

Diving competition at the World University Games continues through July 8. Saturday’s competition begins with Reedy and Sculti in the women’s 3-meter semifinals, with the final to follow. Fielding and Lyle Yost (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Ohio State University) will represent the U.S. in Saturday’s men’s synchronized 3-meter contest.
