He saved his best dive, a forward armstand with two somersaults and one twist, for last which scored 65.10 points and sealed his spot at 10th place.
“In the past two months, Jack has been recovering from a hamstring injury,” coach Mandy Eby said following competition. “He has only been back on 10-meter since last week. It’s been a tough couple of months, and our goal was to compete and improve from preliminaries to finals. He did both these things, and I’m extremely proud of his hard work and dedication. He never once backed down from the challenge in front of him.”
The Summer Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 continues Wednesday with Matthews and Bridget O’Neil (Southlake, Texas) competing in the team event at 4 p.m. ET. The Summer Youth Olympic Games can be watched live on the Olympic Channel or on live stream.
