Matthews Finishes in the Top-10 of the Men's 3-Meter Final at Summer Youth Olympic Games

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina- Jack Matthews (Powell, Ohio) finished in the top-10 at the Summer Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 in the men’s 3-meter final Sunday evening, as the youngest competitor placed ninth with 501.15 points.

In the preliminary round Matthews advanced to the finals after placing 12th following a late comeback. Matthews finished 12.06 points ahead of Spain’s Adrian Abadia Garcia to take the last available spot of the top-12 divers in the preliminary round to advance to the final.

Matthews appeared less nervous in the finals, as he began competition with a forward 3 ½ pike, which scored 60.45 points, a dive he had scored 44.95 points in Sunday morning’s preliminary. In the following two rounds, Matthews scored more than 60 points on his two dives, with a back 2 ½ pike scoring 63.00 points and a reverse 2 ½ pike landing 61.50 points. The Ohio native’s inward 2 ½ pike in the fourth round scored 57.00 points, before Matthews bounced back in the final round when he performed a forward 2 ½ somersaults with one twist for 63.00 points.

Columbia’s Daniel Restpero Garcia earned the gold medal, after finishing competition with 576.05 points. Anthony Harding of Great Britain placed second with 559.50 points, while Russia’s Ruslan Ternovoi finished 8.30 points behind Harding for the bronze medal.

The Summer Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 continues Monday with Bridget O’Neil (Southlake, Texas) competing in the women’s 3-meter preliminary at 8 a.m. ET. Matthews will compete again on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the men’s 10-meter platform at 8 a.m. ET. The Summer Youth Olympic Games can be watched live on the Olympic Channel or on live stream.
