DALLAS- 16 divers have qualified to represent the United States at the FINA World Cup in Wuhan, China next month. Athletes were determined based on cumulative scores at the USA Diving Senior National Championships, which ended Sunday in Dallas.
Team USA features 2016 Olympic silver medalists Sam Dorman (Tempe, Ariz./Miami, Fla.), Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass./Bloomington, Ind.) and Steele Johnson (Carmel, Ind./West Lafayette, Ind.), as well as 2016 Olympians Jessica Parratto (Dover, N.H./Bloomington, Ind.) and Katrina Young (Shoreline, Wash./Tallahassee, Fla.). The World Cup begins June 5 and runs through June 10.
All five Olympians as well as Murphy Bromberg (Bexley, Ohio/Austin, Texas) and David Dinsmore (New Albany, Ohio/Miami, Fla.) bring World Cup experience to Team USA. Bromberg, Dinsmore, Dorman, Johnson and Parratto have represented the U.S. at the past two FINA World Cup meets. Young joined those five divers at the 2014 World Cup in Shanghai, and Hixon was a member of the 2016 World Cup team that competed in Rio de Janeiro. Johnson won a bronze medal in synchronized 10-meter at the 2014 World Cup, and Dinsmore claimed an individual 10-meter bronze at the 2016 World Cup.
Team USA will also carry nine divers competing in their first World Cup. Zach Cooper (Miami, Fla.) joins Young in the mixed 10-meter. “I’m super excited. This is my first time qualifying for a World Cup, World Championships at the senior level. This was definitely a goal (for me and Coburn) when we started training a few months back. Words can’t describe how excited I am. I can’t wait to get over there and compete for Team USA!” Campbell said after qualifying for the mixed 3-meter synchro event.
At the individual level, Team USA’s new faces include Andrew Capobianco (Holly Springs, N.C./Bloomington, Ind.), Hailey Hernandez (Southlake, Texas) and Krysta Palmer (Carson City, Nev./Reno, Nev.).
