DALLAS - The men’s 3-meter and the women’s 10-meter field is set for Saturday’s final after Tuesday’s preliminary and semifinal competition at the USA Diving Senior National Championships. The top 12 divers for each event have advanced to finals. The finals will feature five Olympians – three in the women’s event and two in the men’s event.
Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass./Bloomington, Ind.) was the top qualifier in the men’s 3-meter event in both the preliminary and semifinal rounds, scoring both 426.65 points and 411.20 points. Hixon’s most successful dive in the semifinal came in the third round with a front 3 ½ pike for 77.5 points. Briadam Herrera (Miami, Fla.) followed Hixon for second, finishing the meet with 380.75 points. Grayson Campbell (Vienna, Va./Austin, Texas) was shy of Herrera by 6.7 points.
Tarrin Gilliland (Liberty Hill, Texas) led the women in the 10-meter platform semifinals to advance to the finals. Gilliland, who had 328.9 points, claimed first place in her final dive: a back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists for 78 points. The semifinals showcased a competitive meet amongst Gilliland, Katrina Young (Shoreline, Wash./Tallahassee, Fla.) with 321.4 points, Jessica Parrato (Dover, N.H./Bloomington, Ind.) with 315.7 points and Amy Cozad Magaña (Indianapolis) with 304.65 points, who all finished in the top four. Just four points separated the top four going into the final round.
The Team USA Social Truck presented by OREO will be at SMU’s Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center on Wednesday, May 16 from noon-5 p.m. CT The truck, which is free and open to the public, will feature multiple social interactive elements, along with a prize wheel and free OREO cookies. Additionally, multiple Olympians will be meeting fans and signing autographs, including 2016 Olympian Sam Dorman.
The 2018 USA Diving Senior National Championships is part of the 2018 Team USA Summer Champions Series, presented by Xfinity. The champions series showcases numerous Olympic sports throughout the season, highlighting the year-round quest of Team USA athletes to compete at the Olympic Games.
