ATLANTA- The 2018 USA Diving Junior National Championships continued Monday with Joshua Hedberg (Indiana International School of Diving) winning his second gold medal of competition in the group D boys platform finals, while Anna Lemkin (Stanford Diving) clinched her second gold medal in the group D girls 3-meter title at the McAuley Aquatic Center at Georgia Tech.

Hedberg led the 11-and-under group in the boys platform with 229.35 points to capture the title in the group D boys platform category and his second gold medal in this year’s competition. Hedberg also medaled last year finishing with a bronze. Maxwell Shaver (Tomahawk Diving Club) finished second with 186.65 points, while Ivor Brown (Dominion Dive Cub) finished third, just 3.40 points behind Brown.

“It just feels awesome (to win another event),” Hedberg said following competition. “All this hard work has been worth it.” Hedberg, who is looking to clinch his third gold medal in this week’s competition, will dive Tuesday in the group D boys 3-meter, in which he won the bronze medal in 2017.

Lemkin, like Hedberg, found success in the 11-and-under category as she finished competition with 249.60 points. Lemkin competed in the preliminaries before advancing to the semifinal and final as she had not qualified as one of the prequalified divers coming into Monday’s competition. The California native persisted and found herself at the top spot after performing a critical inward 1 ½ pike for 49.35 points in the final. She slid to second in the round but was able to take back the lead after performing a strong back 1 ½ somersault with 1 ½ twists for 49.20 points to claim her second gold medal of the week. Lemkin won the gold medal Sunday in the group D girls platform event.

“I knew that I had made myself a solid foundation with my voluntary dives, so I knew I needed to be consistent,” Lemkin said after the medal ceremony.

In the second day of competition, divers competed in the preliminary rounds of the B boys 1-meter, B girls 3-meter, C girls platform, A girls platform, A boys 1-meter and C boys 3-meter. Six divers from each event will join prequalified divers to compete in their event’s semifinals. Divers who qualified for the semifinals in the groups B boys 1-meter, B girls 3-meter, A girls platform and A boys 1-meter Friday, while the group C girls platform and the group C boys 3-meter semifinals will take place Thursday.

The 2018 USA Diving Junior National Championships continues through August 4. Tuesday’s events feature group A preliminaries in the girls 3-meter and the boys platform, while group B will compete in preliminaries in the boys 3-meter and girls platform.
