Winners of Winter Trials crowned on day two of competition

ATLANTA – The 2018 USA Diving Winter Trials continued Monday at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech with the men’s 3-meter synchro and women’s platform synchro preliminaries and finals. Andrew Capobianco (Holly Springs, N.C./Bloomington, Ind.) and Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass./Bloomington, Ind.) won the men’s 3-meter synchro with 854.34 overall points, while Murphy Bromberg (Bexley, Ohio/Austin, Texas) and Katrina Young (Shoreline Wash./Tallahassee, Fla.) clinched the women’s platform synchro with 601.32 total points.

In his first men’s 3-meter synchro since 2016 Olympic silver medalist Sam Dorman (Tempe, Ariz./Miami, Fla.) announced his retirement, Hixon partnered with former Hoosier teammate Capobianco. The pair led their competition by 46.35 points in the preliminaries and continued to find success throughout the finals with strong, consistent dives. In the fifth round of the finals, an inward 3 ½ tuck scored the pair 93.84 points. Mark Anderson (Lake Forest, Calif./Austin, Texas) and Jordan Windle (Morrisville, N.C./Austin, Texas) finished second with 755.79 points, while Jacob Fielding (Los Angeles, Calif./Columbus, Ohio) and Lyle Yost (Shaker Heights, Ohio) placed third with 679.53 points

Entering finals, Bromberg and Young were less than half a point behind Tarrin Gilliland (Liberty Hill, Texas) and Delaney Schnell (Tucson, Ariz) and held onto second place through the first two rounds of competition. The pair inched up to first in the third round when a forward 3 ½ pike scored 72.90 points. Bromberg and Young remained at first through the rest of competition, as they were able to give themselves enough distance from Gilliland and Schnell following a strong inward 3 ½ tuck scored 78.72 points in the fourth round. Gilliland and Schnell wrapped up finals at second place with 584.76 points, just 16.56 points behind first. Young and Schnell also competed together and finished third with 565.76 points.

The Winter Trials continue Tuesday, December 18 with preliminaries in the men’s platform synchro and the women’s 3-meter synchro at 10 a.m. ET. Finals in both the men’s platform synchro and the women’s 3-meter synchro will begin at 3:30 p.m. ET. Tuesday’s competitions will be streamed on Facebook Live through USA Diving’s Facebook page.
