2018 Winter Trials medals in mixed 3meter synchro and mixed platform synchro awarded

ATLANTA – Day one of the 2018 USA Diving Winter Trials began at the campus of Georgia Institute of Technology at the McAuley Aquatic Center, where national titles were awarded to Jacob Cornish (Honolulu, Hawaii/Austin, Texas) and Meghan O’Brien (Concord, Mass./Austin, Texas) for the mixed 3-meter synchro after finishing finals with 263.70 points Sunday. Sophia McAfee (San Marino, Calif.) and Max Weinrich (Brookeville, Md.) clinched their national title in the mixed platform synchro after completing the finals with 263.70 points.

Despite being the only competitors of the mixed 3-meter synchro final, Cornish and O’Brien earned their national title spots after completing five dives in the finals. Their strongest dive of the afternoon came in the final round on a back 2 ½ pike, which totaled 65.70 points. Cornish will resume competition on Wednesday in the men’s 1-meter preliminaries and again on Friday in the men’s platform preliminaries. O’Brien will return to the springboard Thursday where she will compete in the women’s 1-meter preliminaries before competing in Friday’s women’s 3-meter preliminaries.

In the mixed platform synchro final, McAfee and Weinrich were also the sole competitors in their event, where they earned the national title. In the final round of competition, the pair performed a back 2 ½ pike in the final round for 66.24 points, their most successful dive of the afternoon. McAfee will compete Wednesday in the women’s platform preliminaries, while Weinrich will perform Friday in the men’s platform preliminaries.

The Winter Trials continue Monday, December 17 with preliminaries in the men’s 3-meter synchro and the women’s 10-meter synchro at 10 a.m. ET. Finals in both the men’s 3-meter synchro and the women’s 10-meter synchro will begin at 3:30 p.m. ET. Monday’s competitions will be streamed on Facebook Live through USA Diving’s Facebook page.
