ATLANTA- The 2018 USA Diving Junior National Championships continued Wednesday with Bennett Greene (Tennessee Diving) winning the group C boys platform title and Avery Worobel (Duke Diving) clinching the group C girls 3-meter gold medal.
Greene, who has been diving since he was five years old, scored 302.30 points in the 12-13 age group boys platform to clinch the gold medal. He also medaled last year, when he placed first in the boys platform in the 11-and-under age group. Greene will continue competition Thursday, as he will compete in the group C boys 3-meter semifinals.
“I think he had a great performance,” Tennessee Diving coach Michael Wright said. “His semifinal left him with a little room for improvement going into finals. He came out in finals with everything he had.”
Worobel, who won the girls 3-meter title in the 11-and-under group in last year’s Junior National Championships, scored 361.85 points in the 12-13 age group to capture the title. She will continue competition in tomorrow’s group C girls platform and again Friday in the 3-meter semifinals. The North Carolina native won both titles in the 2017 competition.
“I just really needed to focus,” Worobel said about today’s performance. “I couldn’t let anything distract me. I knew I was really prepared, so I didn’t let myself break apart and get nervous.”
The 2018 USA Diving Junior National Championships continues through Saturday, August 4, as six divers from each preliminary event will join prequalified divers to compete in the semifinals in the groups B boys platform, B girls 1-meter, A girls 1-meter and A boys 3-meter. Group C divers will also compete in the boys 3-meter and girls platform semifinals. All events will be live streamed and can be found here.
