DRESDEN, Germany – The United States sent a team of four athletes to the Dresden International Youth Diving Meet, and two of them were in action Thursday on the first day of competition.
Johanna Holloway (Boynton Beach, Fla.) placed eighth in the group A girls’ platform event and Daryn Wright (Plainfield, Ind.) finished 11th in the group B girls’ 1-meter competition. Both girls qualified for the finals after placing 10th in their preliminaries.
Holloway tallied 311.15 points on platform, including an inward 3 ½ tuck that scored 51.20 points. Great Britain’s Emily Martin won the event with 392.80 points.
Wright scored 279.20 points on 1-meter, an event she does not regularly train. Her best dive was her inward 1 ½ pike, which earned 43.20 points. Russia’s Ekaterina Beliaeva topped the field with 335.35 points.
The Youth Diving Meet continues through Sunday, April 29. Wright will compete on platform on Friday, with Holloway next competing on Saturday. Clayton Chaplin (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Quinn Henninger (Denver, Colo.) begin competition Friday when they dive in the boys’ group B 3-meter contest.
