USA Diving has named the Dominion Dive Club and the Ohio State Diving Club as Junior Podium Centers for 2017.

The Junior Podium Centers are part of a pilot program designed to create a pathway to success and provide resources to top junior programs. The centers also will serve as a resource for all USA Diving members and will host educational clinics as part of their selection as a center. USA Diving aims to continue the program in 2018 and beyond.

The 2017 Junior Podium Centers have been established at facilities with coaches who have regularly produced Junior National Squad athletes and Junior Pan Am and Junior World Championships team members in the last four years.

The Ohio State Dive Club sent three athletes to the 2017 Junior Pan American Championships, with two of them coming home with medals. The program sent two divers to the Junior World Championships in both 2014 and 2016, and two Ohio State Diving Club team members were on the 2015 Junior Pan American Championships team.

“The Ohio State Diving Club is thrilled and humbled to be named as one of the USA Diving Junior Podium Centers. This is a great opportunity to serve the diving community as a whole through potential camps and clinics which can help disseminate educational information to the masses.,” said Ohio State Diving Club coach John Appleman. “I personally came to Ohio State Diving Club to have access to the amazing resources that are here in Columbus. I am extremely excited to share those resources with all that are interested. It is my hope that the Junior Podium Center concept can help move our country towards a pathway of long-term international success.”

Three members of the Dominion Dive Club represented the U.S. at the 2016 Junior World Championships. Two DDC divers competed at the 2015 Junior Pan American Championships and one represented the U.S. at the 2017 Junior Pan Am meet.

“I am filled with joy and truly blessed that the Dominion Dive Club has been selected as a USA Diving Junior Podium Center. I am excited to work with USA Diving to further develop the USA Diving junior program and continue to have USA on the podium. This is a tremendous opportunity for diving in our nation’s capital area, and I look forward to sharing our resources with the diving community as we aim for continued success,” said Dominion Dive Club coach Stephanie Sutton.

When selecting the podium centers, the selection committee used an objective set of criteria based on athlete results, pool and dryland facilities, training schedules and coach-to-athlete ratios. Should either of the selected Junior Podium Centers be unable to fulfill its obligations, another program will be selected to serve in its place.
