USA closes out Madrid Grand Prix with two top-five finishes

                Tarrin Gilliland (Liberty Hill, Texas/Midland, Texas) finished fifth in the individual women’s 10-meter final and Ben Bramley (Wellesley, Mass.) and Max Flory (Fairfax, Va.) paired for fourth in men’s synchronized 10-meter as FINA Grand Prix competition concluded Sunday in Madrid, Spain.
                Gilliland scored 294.20 points to finish fifth in the women’s 10-meter final. China’s Jiaqi Zhang and Minjie Zhang took first and second with 382.75 and 355.70 points, while Canadian Olivia Chamandy was third with 325.55 points.
                Gilliland was in second place after two rounds upon opening the finals with 72 points on her front 3 ½ pike and following with 67.20 points on her armstand double back somersault with 1 ½ twists, but then faltered on a back 2 ½ pike that earned just 17.40 points. She rallied back with 65.60 points on an inward 3 ½ tuck before closing out her list with 72 points on a back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists.
                Bramley and Flory scored 349.59 points for fourth in a 10-meter synchro contest won by Mexico’s Kevin Berlin and Diego Balleza with 388.50 points. The Americans 286.23 scored as high as 71.04 points on their back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists and scored 60 or more points on each of their other three optional dives after opening with 90 points on their two voluntary dives. Armenia’s Vladimir Harutyunyan and Azat Harutyunyan scored 371.88 for second, and Vadim Kaptur and Artsiom Barouski of Belarus took third at 358.08.
