Cooper and Fowler Clinch Top Seeds with Semifinal Victories

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two more finals were determined at the 2017 USA Diving National Championships Thursday afternoon at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of the Ohio State University as Zach Cooper (RipFest) and Anne Fowler (Alexandria Dive Club) earned top seeds in the men’s 10-meter and women’s 3-meter finals respectively.

Cooper posted the top mark in the men’s 10-meter semifinal, etching a score of 388.45 points. The University of Miami commit opened with four dives of 54.00 or more points to set the tone. He then put up 77.70 points on a forward 4½ somersault tuck that sparked a righteous cheer from the crowd. Cooper also won the quarterfinal with a score of 404.35 points.

Christo Law (Unattached) finished second in the event with 369.80 points. He also followed Cooper in the quarterfinal, amassing 381.80 points. Max Flory (Dominion Dive Club) finished third in the semifinal with 360.85 points, improving five spots from his eighth-place finish in the quarterfinal.

Fowler finished atop the leaderboard in the women’s 3-meter semifinal, collecting 287.10 points. She showed true consistency throughout the semifinal, scoring between 54.60-58.80 on all of her dives. The 58.80 came on a forward 3½ somersault tuck in round two and she continued to press the standard, scoring 58.50 on two of her final three dives.

Alison Gibson (Longhorn Aquatics), the 2017 women’s 1-meter national champion, took second in the semifinal with 278.00 points. Carolina Sculti (Marlins Diving Club), the first-place finisher from the quarterfinal, finished third in the semifinal with 268.65 points.

Day 12 of competition at the 2017 USA Diving National Championships includes the men’s 3-meter final and women’s 10-meter final. Competition starts at 6:30 p.m. ET with the men’s 3-meter final, followed by the women’s 10-meter final beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET. The women’s 10-meter final will be shown live on NBCSN as well as the NBC Sports App starting at 9:00 p.m., with men’s event to follow in the broadcast.  

The 2017 USA Diving National Championships is part of the 2017 Team USA Summer Champions Series, presented by Comcast. The Champions Series showcases numerous Olympic sports throughout the season, highlighting the year-round quest of Team USA athletes to compete at the Olympic Games.
