Five U.S. divers have been invited to participate in the 2016 FINA/NVC Diving World Series, a four-meet, invitation-only circuit for the top finishers from the 2015 FINA World Championships.
David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind./West Lafayette, Ind.), Amy Cozad (Indianapolis, Ind./Bloomington, Ind.), Sam Dorman (Tempe, Ariz./Coral Gables, Fla.), Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif./Stanford, Calif.) and Steele Johnson (Carmel, Ind./West Lafayette, Ind.) all had top-seven showings at the 2015 World Championships to receive invitations to compete at the four World Series meets in 2016.
Boudia will compete on 10-meter both individually and in the synchronized competition with Johnson. Boudia won the individual 10-meter silver medal at the 2015 World Championships to mark his third consecutive World Championships silver medal on the event. He paired with Johnson for fifth place in the synchronized 10-meter event at the World Championships.
Cozad was invited to compete in the individual women’s 10-meter event at the World Series as a result of her sixth-place finish at the 2015 World Championships. Her sixth-place finish was the best by a U.S. woman on that event at a World Championships since Laura Wilkinson was fourth in 2007.
Dorman and Ipsen finished seventh in synchronized 3-meter at the World Championships to earn a World Series berth in that event.
The 2016 FINA World Series kicks off March 11-13 in Beijing, followed by a competition in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from March 17-19. The series continues April 15-17 in Windsor, Ontario and wraps up April 22-24 in Kazan, Russia – the site of the 2015 World Championships.
Prior to beginning the World Series circuit, all five divers first will head to Rio de Janeiro for February’s FINA World Cup, where they will look to qualify the United States for the 2016 Olympic Games. Johnson and Ipsen each will compete two events at the World Cup, with Johnson set to dive individually and with Boudia in synchronized 10-meter and Ipsen set to compete individually and with Dorman in synchronized 3-meter. Cozad will pair with Jessica Parratto (Dover, N.H./Bloomington, Ind.) in synchronized at the World Cup. The World Cup is the final opportunity for countries to qualify for the Olympic Games in diving.
