INDIANAPOLIS – Kassidy Cook (The Woodlands, Texas) and Steele Johnson (Carmel, Ind./West Lafayette, Ind.) lead after Friday’s women’s 3-meter and men’s 10-meter semifinals at the USA Diving Winter National Championships. The finals are set for Sunday.
Johnson scored 1006.70 points on two lists of dives to lead Rafael Quintero (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico/Tucson, Ariz.) by 70 points heading into the finals. David Dinsmore (New Albany, Ohio/Coral Gables, Fla.) is third at 884.10.
Johnson earned eight 10s in the semifinals, receiving four 10s and 94.50 points on an inward 3 ½ tuck and four 10s and 97.35 points on his back 3 ½ tuck. He scored more than 80 points on three other dives in the semifinals.
Cook will take an 11.35-point lead into the finals after scoring 644.55 points over two lists of dives in the preliminaries and semifinals. Deidre Freeman (Grinnell, Iowa/Iowa City, Iowa) stands in second with 633.20 points, and Brooke Schultz (Gainesville, Fla.) is third at 609.70.
Cook, who won the 3-meter title at the AT&T National Championships this summer, was second behind Freeman after the preliminaries but took the lead in the semifinals after scoring more than 60 points on all five of her dives.
The USA Diving Winter National Championships continue through Sunday, December 20. Saturday’s events feature finals in women’s 10-meter and men’s 3-meter.
