Factors necessary to win medals and sustain competitive success at the international level were identified by USA Curling athletes, USA Curling Olympic and developmental coaches, and United States Olympic Training Center Sport Performance Team Leaders prior to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. These core factors, commonly referred to as elements, include:

  1. physical skills
  2. technical skills
  3. tactical skills
  4. team systems
  5. mental skills

In addition to using these five elements to develop programs for training High Performance Program athletes, USA Curling Sport Education has begun bringing this knowledge to curlers throughout the United States through published materials and training camps.
