Finals determined at 2020 Junior National Championships
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Kevin Tuma’s team kept its winning streak intact with a decisive 9-2 victory over Chase Sinnett to advance to the men’s final at the 2020 USA Curling Junior National Championships in Eau Claire, Wis.
The Delaney Strouse rink controlled their match against Wisconsin’s Samantha Jones squad to move on to face Cora Farrell’s team in the women’s gold-medal match tomorrow afternoon at the Eau Claire Curling Club. Strouse (Midland, Mich.) and teammates Sydney Mullaney (Concord, Mass.), Susan Dudt (Malvern, Pa.), and Rebecca Rodgers (Leyden, Mass.) scored a point in the final end to sew up their 6-3 semifinal win.
Tuma (St. Paul, Minn.) and teammates Samuel Clasen (Roseville, Minn.), Michael Mattson (Woodbury, Minn.), Sidney Harris (St. Paul, Minn.), and Austin Bengtson (Spicer, Minn.) will now take on undefeated Luc Violette’s team at 9 a.m. Saturday. Because of the Team Violette’s undefeated status the team has two chances to win the junior national title with a two-loss provision in place. If needed, a second final will be played at 1 p.m.
After losing their first three out of four matches, including an 11-4 loss to Violette in the round robin, the Tuma rink will head into the final riding a four-game win streak. Team Tuma stole multiple ends against Sinnett (Medfield, Mass.) and his team of Sam Strouse (Midland, Mich.), Eli Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), Trevor Marquardt (Poynette, Wis.), and Ethan Sampson (Edmore, N.D.).
Leading 3-1 after six ends, Team Strouse made a double takeout in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-1 over Jones (Endeavor, Wis.) and her team of Abigail Marquardt (Poynette, Wis.), Elizabeth Vorpahl (Portage, Wis.), and Anna Armstrong (Appleton, Wis.). Jones was then forced to make a takeout to score a single point in the eighth end as Strouse’s side continued to control the match. Strouse was forced to draw for one point in the ninth end but was slight heavy to award a stolen point to Jones instead. In the 10th end, a great double from Mullaney cleared out a corner guard and a stone buried in the house to pave the path Team Strouse’s victory.
Team Strouse (6-2) will now take on Farrell’s team (6-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the women’s gold-medal game. Go to www.usacurl.org to follow along.
