USA concludes team round robin at Youth Olympic Games
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The good news is that Team USA gets to push the reset button at the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 after finishing the team competition with a 1-4 record in Champery, Switzerland.
Ethan Hebert (Lowell, Mass.) and U.S. teammates Kaitlin Murphy (Fairview Park, Ohio), Charlie Thompson (Eau Claire, Wis.), and Alina Tschumakow (West Roxbury, Mass.) will now focus on the start of mixed doubles later in the week at the Champery Curling Club after falling to Sweden today, 8-3, as their round robin came to a close.
The U.S. team had a modest 1-0 lead over Axel Landelius’s team from Sweden but then gave up six points over the next three ends to give themselves an uphill battle. The American team would score singles in the fifth and sixth but gave up a deuce in the seventh as the Swedes sewed up the victory.
Canada (5-0) and the Russian Federation (4-1) have advanced to the quarterfinals out of Group A while Switzerland (4-0) continues to lead Group B. New Zealand (4-1) and Norway (3-2) earned the playoff spots out of Group C while Italy (4-0) and Japan (4-1) wrapped up Group D’s berths.
The mixed doubles competition begins on Saturday. All of the competing athletes will be paired with a player from another country with medals on the line (pairings and schedule TBA). Follow all of the curling action at http://worldcurling.org/events/yog2020.
