2020 Junior National Championships underway in Eau Claire

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The first day of competition at the 2020 USA Curling Junior National Championships concluded Monday night at the Eau Claire Curling Club with the women’s field split evenly.

Four women’s teams won both of their opening day matches to put Cora Farrell (Fairbanks, Alaska), Samantha Jones (Endeavor, Wis.), Christine McMakin (Fargo, N.D.), and Delaney Strouse (Midland, Mich.) on top of the pack.

In the men’s division, Chase Sinnett (Medfield, Mass.) and Luc Violette (Lake Stevens, Wash.) were the only two teams to escape day one unscathed. Sinnett’s team of Sam Strouse (Midland, Mich.), Eli Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), Ethan Sampson (Edmore, N.D.), and Trevor Marquardt (Poynette, Wis.) defeated Kevin Tuma’s Minnesota rink, 9-6, to open the competition and followed up in the evening draw with an 8-5 victory over Danny Casper’s rink. Violette’s squad of Graem Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.), Ben Richardson (Cleveland, Ohio), Riley Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.), and Jon Harstad (Duluth, Minn.) had to go to an extra end to shake off Coleman Thurston’s Wisconsin rink, 8-6, and then outlasted Ben Randall’s Wisconsin team, 9-5, in the night session.
