Switzerland bumps USA from playoffs at 2019 World Mixed Championship in Scotland

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – A fast start from Switzerland doomed Team USA in a 7-2 playoff loss today at the 2019 World Mixed Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Hunter Clawson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and the U.S. team allowed Martin Rios’s Swiss squad to build an early 4-1 lead that the Americans could not overcome in the second half.

“We got a little punished for being the inexperienced team we are, we’ve been doing it all week and getting away with it,” Hunter Clawson said. “Just having a little miss here, a miss there, one or two half shots, but against this team, as good as they are, they really punished us for that.”

Clawson and teammates Katherine Gourianova (Potomac, Md.), Eli Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), and Sydney Mullaney (Concord, Mass.) were held to a single point in the fifth end and allowed the Swiss to put another deuce on the board in the sixth. In the seventh, the U.S. team allowed a single steal to fall further behind at Curl Aberdeen.

“Overall, we did really well in general,” Hunter Clawson said. “It was a lot of fun, there was a lot of good support, and the athletes here are a lot of fun. Getting to meet so many athletes, from so many countries with varied experiences, from Olympic athletes to those playing their first event, it's fun to see.”
