USA drops final round robin game at 2019 World Mixed Championship in Scotland

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Playoff-bound Team USA lost a close match today to wrap up the round robin portion of the 2019 World Mixed Championship with a 5-2 record at Curl Aberdeen.

Hunter Clawson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and teammates Katherine Gourianova (Potomac, Md.), Eli Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), and Sydney Mullaney (Concord, Mass.) will compete in Friday’s Round of 16 playoffs and pairings will be announced once the round robin concludes tonight in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Australia’s Hugh Millikin rink took an early lead in today’s match after scoring three points against the U.S. team and never lost its footing in an eventual 7-5 victory.

“The first end, going down three, gave up a big end then fought our way back. They made their shots, but they didn’t finish them exactly right. There were a couple of little sweeping mistakes,” said Coach Eric Clawson.

The U.S. record of 5-2 in the round robin positions them for a second- or third-place ranking in Group C depending on the outcome of the last session.

“We’ve had two tough games. Difficulty playing Kazakhstan, then difficulty today, but I think the only way you learn is by making mistakes. We’ve made them now so hopefully we’ll learn from them. I’m optimistic looking forward,” Coach Clawson said.

After the round robin concludes the playoff contenders will be ranked to create the Round of 16 pairings with games set to take place at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday followed by the quarterfinals. Other playoff teams include Group A’s Canada, Germany and Slovakia; Group B’s Norway, Denmark and Poland; Group C’s Spain, Hungary and Sweden; Group D’s Scotland and Ireland (third team to be determined); and Group E’s Russia, Switzerland and South Korea.
