USA clinches playoff berth at 2019 World Mixed Championship in Scotland

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Hunter Clawson and the U.S. team have marched into the playoffs of the 2019 World Mixed Championship after winning their fifth straight game at Curl Aberdeen.

Clawson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and teammates Katherine Gourianova (Potomac, Md.), Eli Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), and Sydney Mullaney (Concord, Mass.) defeated Kazakhstan’s three-member team led by Abylaikhan Zhuzbay tonight in Aberdeen, Scotland.

“It’s good that we won and were in [the playoffs],” said Hunter Clawson, 23, who led Team USA at the 2017 World Mixed Championship as well.

The win improves the U.S. team to 5-1 in the round robin standings in Group C with one match left against Australia (2-4) tomorrow. Spain (5-0) and Hungary (5-1) also have clinched playoff spots out of Group C. In total, 10 of the 16 available playoff berths have been secured as Canada, Germany, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, Russia and Switzerland also will compete on Friday.

Against Kazakhstan, the U.S. team grabbed an early lead when they stole two points out of the gates. Kazakhstan was eventually able to pull even in the fourth end to re-set the game heading into the second half. The U.S. scored a deuce in the sixth end but lost the lead for the first time when Kazakhstan earned three points in the seventh. Needing a deuce to win, the U.S. team was able to get the winning points in place.

“I knew we were comfortable in that situation, despite becoming uncomfortable because of that situation, so I felt confident we could score a deuce. It was just going out there and doing our job because we hadn’t been doing it all day,” Hunter Clawson said about the eighth end.
