USA pushes win streak to two games at 2019 World Mixed Championship in Scotland
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Hunter Clawson’s team from the United States pushed its win streak to two games after securing a 7-3 triumph over Latvia this morning at the 2019 World Mixed Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Hunter Clawson and the American are now 2-1 in Group C in the seven-game round robin at Curl Aberdeen.
“We just tried to put rocks in the rings to setup ends, playing for the points and kept making them play tough shots,” Hunter Clawson said after the game.
The U.S once again took an early lead and was then able to apply pressure to keep Latvia’s Jelena Rudzite rink at bay. After stealing two points to start the scoring in the second end, Clawson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and teammates Katherine Gourianova (Potomac, Md.), Eli Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), and Sydney Mullaney (Concord, Mass.) put the game away in the second half scoring three in the fifth end. Latvia (0-3) mustered a single in the sixth but the U.S. (2-1) team scored two more in the seventh to cruise to their second win of the championship.
“There was a lot of pressure both ways, the second end where we stole two, up until skip stones it was looking like it could have been two or three for them,” Hunter Clawson said. “They had a lot of rocks piled on top of the rings and we were able to get a little lucky on their shots and make a couple of nice ones on ours to make them shoot against a bunch. And – lucky enough – we got the steal.”
The U.S. returns to the ice tonight to take on group leader Hungary (3-0). After the round robin concludes, the top 16 teams will advance to Friday’s playoffs. To follow along throughout the competition, go to www.worldcurling.org.
