USA heads to Finland to secure world championship berth

USA set to earn back world championship berth

 

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The Toyota USA Curling National Team has one mission in Finland next week – to get the Americans qualified to compete in the 2020 World Wheelchair Championship.

 

Led by Paralympian Steve Emt (Hebron, Conn.), the U.S. team needs to finish in the top three at next week’s World Wheelchair B Curling Championship to compete in the subsequent world championship in Switzerland at the end of February.

 

The U.S. finished 11th at the 2019 World Wheelchair Championship and was relegated to the B Championship, which is set to take place Nov. 27-Dec. 2 at Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja, Finland. A total of 15 countries are competing for the coveted three berths to the world competition. Emt and his team of Matthew Thums (Weston, Wis.), David Samsa (Suamico, Wis.), Meghan Lino (East Falmouth, Mass.), and Pam Wilson (Westminster, Colo.) begin round robin play at 8 p.m. (GMT+2) Wednesday against the Czech Republic’s Radek Musilek rink. The U.S. team is coached by Rusty Schieber (Portage, Wis.) with Marc DePerno (Deerfield, N.Y.) as team leader. Other countries in Group B that the U.S. will compete against in round robin competition include Denmark, England, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, and Slovenia. Group A features Canada, Finland, Italy, Japan, Poland, Sweden, and Turkey.

Friday, Nov. 29: USA vs. Germany (Christiane Putzich), 2:30 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 30: USA vs. Slovenia (Robert Zerovnik), 8:30 a.m.; USA vs. England (Rosemary Lenton), 3:30 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 1: USA vs. Hungary (Viktor Beke), 9:30 a.m.
