Semifinals set at 2019 Arena National Championships

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The final four men’s and women’s teams have been determined at the 2019 USA Curling Arena National Championships in West Chester, Pa.

In this afternoon’s women’s playoffs, Katy Mercer’s defending champions from Cleveland Skating Club took down Heather Semenuik’s Windy City crew, 10-6. They will now take on Wine Country’s Katie Feldman rink in tomorrow morning’s semifinals. Joining them will be Diane Palme’s Silicon Valley team after securing an 8-6 extra-end victory over Monique Penney’s Cincinnati foursome in the other playoff match. Next up for Palme’s team will be a semifinal date with top-seeded Curling Club of Houston.

In last night’s men’s quarterfinal action at Ice Line, two past champs, one newcomer and one familiar face in the playoffs all secured berths to the semifinals. Nick Myers and the defending champions from Dallas-Fort Worth earned a 9-3 victory over Cameron Rittenour’s rink from the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Curling Club. Past champion Christopher Doremus led his Houston team to an extra end win over Kansas City when they stole a point to keep their gold-medal dreams alive. Cincinnati’s Jonathan Penney, winner of silver and bronze medals previously at this event, used two big steals to fuel a 12-6 victory over 2016 champion Mark Robinson of Pittsburgh. John Negus, playing in his first Arena Nationals, led his Cleveland Skating Club team to a 7-6 overtime win over last year’s bronze medalist – David Markowski of Wine Country Curling Club.

The Texas-Ohio men’s semifinals will feature Dallas-Fort Worth taking on Cleveland and Houston battling Cincinnati at 7 ET tonight.
