Playoff berths being secured at 2019 Arena National Championships

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Five teams have secured playoff berths with one day left to finish the round robin portion of the 2019 USA Curling Arena National Championships at Ice Line in West Chester, Pa.

Heather Semenuik’s Windy City rink and Curling Club of Houston’s Merlin Howick’s team are the first two women’s teams to punch their tickets to the playoffs. Howick and her Houston teammates Man-Fong Mah, Alyssa Parks, Sara Johnson, and Kelly Reynolds (all of Houston, Texas) went a perfect 4-0 in pool play after defeating Monique Penney’s Cincinnati team, 9-7, this afternoon.

Semenuik (Naperville, Ill.) and her Windy City team of Tonya Henderson (Aurora, Ill.), Carol Collins (St. Charles, Ill.), and Kerry Myers (Naperville, Ill.) have one more round robin game but are currently 3-0, which ensures a top two finish in Pool C.

In the men’s division, the defending champs from Dallas-Forth Worth finished up pool play last night with an 11-2 victory over Richard Lazarowich’s Silicon Valley rink. Nick Myers (Arlington, Texas) and his DFW team of Laith Sando (Burleson, Texas), Kevin Roberts (Frisco, Texas), John Lambert (Garland, Texas), and Stephen Kleppe (Denton, Texas) went 4-0 in Pool A to advance to Thursday night’s quarterfinals. In Pool D, Sioux Falls (3-1) and Cincinnati (3-0) also have clinched playoff berths.

Cameron Rittenour and his Sioux Falls team of Austin Weber, Jordan Nilson, and Chris Leither (all of Sioux Falls, S.D.) defeated Justin Filipiak’s St. Louis rink, 6-5, this morning to wrap up their round robin portion. Jonathan Penney’s Cincinnati squad will take on Ocean State (1-2) this afternoon to try to go unscathed through the preliminary round.

The round robin continues today with two more draws on the schedule at 4 p.m. and 8 tonight. The pool play continues through Thursday morning followed by the men’s quarterfinals. The women’s playoffs begin Friday afternoon. Live scores and standings are posted at https://go.teamusa.org/2JABMHI.
