2019 Arena National Championships underway in West Chester

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The 2019 USA Curling Arena National Championships are off and running at Ice Line in West Chester, Pa.

The event kicked off last night with the opening draw seeing the defending champs from Dallas-Fort Worth pick up where they left off last year but with Nick Myers in the skip position this season. Myers (Arlington, Texas) and his team of two-time event champions Laith Sando (Burleson, Texas), Kevin Roberts (Frisco, Texas), John Lambert (Garland, Texas), and newcomer Stephen Kleppe (Denton, Texas) started off the event with a convincing 10-2 victory over Kansas City’s Nathaniel Percell rink.

It was Windy City’s Eric Reithel rink that had the most dramatic start to the event, however. Reithel (Gary, Ind.) and teammates Michael Lerner (Munster, Ind.), Tom Arra (Downers Grove, Ill.), and George Collins (Saint Charles, Ill.) had a near perfect opening end when they scored seven points against the host club from Jersey Pinelands, skipped by Ryan Adamson. Windy City would go on to win, 11-4. Long Island’s John Paccione led his team to a 14-0 shutout of Circle City’s Wes Hoffman. 2016 champion Mark Robinson led his Pittsburgh rink to a 9-4 triumph over the 2017 winners from the Curling Club of Houston, skipped by Chris Doremus. In the lone close match of the night, Cleveland Skating Club’s John Negus held on for a 6-5 win over Lone Star’s Zachary Grantham rink from Austin, Texas.

In this morning’s competition, the first two women’s games took place with event newcomers Curling Club of Houston taking down San Francisco Bay Area, 5-3. Houston’s Merlin Howick, Man-Fong Mah, Alyssa Parks, Sara Johnson, and Kelly Reynolds (all of Houston, Texas) stole consecutive ends midway through the game to hold off May Eaton’s Bay Area squad. Circle City’s Tamera Hoffman led her team to a 10-3 victory over Jennifer Ying’s Diamond State team from Delaware.

In men’s action today, Cameron Rittenour’s Sioux Falls team got past Ocean State’s David Rosler, 7-3, in Pool D. Cincinnati’s Jonathan Penney led his team to an 11-4 triumph over Brian Hufe’s Diamond State rink.  In Pool C, San Francisco Bay Area’s P.N. Raju took an early lead over Brian Martinelli’s Las Vegas squad and never let go in a 6-3 win.
