Teams elbowing for playoff spots at 2019 Mixed National Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – As the round robin nears the end point, teams are jockeying for a top four finish to earn playoff spots at the 2019 USA Curling Mixed National Championship in Golden, Colo.

Two more sessions of the round robin are on tap today at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. MT at the Denver Curling Club. Caitlin Pulli’s Rochester Curling Club rink and Evan Workin’s defending champs from Fargo-Moorhead continue to lead the pack with matching 5-1 records. Right on their heels at 4-1, however, are three teams making moves for the four coveted playoff berths.

It was announced today by the World Curling Federation that the site for the 2019 World Mixed Championship will be Aberdeen, Scotland, which makes winning this tournament even sweeter as the champions become Team USA this fall. The world championship will take place Oct. 12-19 at Curl Aberdeen.

The teams tied for third place include Aaron Johnston’s Denver rink, Sean Murray’s Great Lakes foursome and Hunter Clawson’s team from the Grand National region. In last night’s draw, Murray’s squad defeated Wisconsin’s Ben Richardson rink, 7-5, to secure two wins on Tuesday and stay in the playoff hunt. Clawson and teammates Katherine Gourianova (Potomac, Md.), Eli Clawson (Clarksville, Md.), and Sydney Mullaney (Concord, Mass.) defeated Tyler George’s Minnesota team, 7-2, to earn their fourth win. Johnston’s Denver rink shut out Doug Schaak’s Mountain Pacific squad, 10-0, to reach a 4-1 record with four round robin games left.

Workin’s Dakota Territory also got past Schaak’s team in the night draw by a 9-3 score as they improved to 5-1. Pulli’s New York rink scored a single point in the final end to hold off David Durrant’s Midwest team.
