2019 Mixed National Championship underway in Denver

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The 2019 USA Curling Mixed National Championship kicked off Sunday afternoon at the Denver Curling Club in Golden, Colo.

The defending champions from the Fargo-Moorhead Curling Club led by Evan Workin (Fargo, N.D.) and Caitlin Pulli’s Grand National II rink have the early lead in the round robin standings after winning both of their matches yesterday.

Workin and his team of Rachel Workin (Fargo, N.D.), Jordan Brown (Elk River, Minn.), and Christina Lammers (Reiles Acres, N.D.) opened the six-day tournament with a win over Thomas Lee’s rink when the Washington team had to forfeit after the second half began as they had inadvertently switched out a broom head to an illegal one. In the evening session, the Dakota Territory rink cruised to an 8-2 win over David Durrant’s Midwest rink to start the nine-game round robin with a 2-0 record.

Pulli (Rochester, N.Y.), who won the women’s national championship in 2010, led her team of Jeff Pulli (Rochester, N.Y.), Rebecca Andrew (Penfield, N.Y.), and Jason Scott (Rochester, N.Y.) to a 7-4 triumph over Wisconsin’s Ben Richardson rink and followed up with a 6-5 victory over Hunter Clawson’s fellow Grand National team.

2018 Olympic champion Tyler George (Duluth, Minn.) led his Minnesota team to a 9-1 win over Doug Schaak’s rink from the Mountain Pacific region. Aaron Johnston, representing the Mid-America region, led the local team to a 10-3 victory over Lee’s Washington rink from the Granite Curling Club to be among three teams tied for third place at 1-0. Sean Murray took his Great Lakes team to 1-0 with a 6-1 win over Durrant’s team (0-2). Richardson’s Wisconsin rink rebounded from its loss to Pulli with a 10-2 victory over Doug Schaak’s rink (0-2).
