U.S. men finish eighth at Winter World University Games

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Andrew Stopera and Team USA completed their run at the 2019 Winter World University Games in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, with a 12-5 loss to the Czech Republic today.

Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and teammates Luc Violette (Edmonds, Wash.), Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) and Graem Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) couldn’t keep Jaroslav Vedral’s playoff-bound rink off the scoreboard in the lopsided loss at Ivan Yarygin Sports Palace. Earlier in the day the U.S. fell to Korea’s JeongJae Lee rink, 7-4. The final ranking for the U.S. team is eighth.

Great Britain (7-2) and Canada (6-3) will advance directly to the Saturday’s semifinals while Norway (5-4) and Sweden (5-4) will face off in a qualification playoff. The Czech Republic (5-4) and Switzerland (6-3) will meet in the other playoff. The medal games will take place on Sunday.
