USA finishes 11th at World Wheelchair Championship
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – Steve Emt and Team USA fought hard for 11 round robin games but in the closing moments of the 2019 World Wheelchair Championship round robin they found their lead slipping away once again as Slovakia battled back to defeat the U.S.
The loss was even more significant than an “L” in the right column as it relegated the U.S. to the World Wheelchair B competition next season where they will have to fight for a berth into next year’s world championship in Switzerland.
Emt (Hebron, Conn.) and teammates Matthew Thums (Weston, Wis.), David Samsa (Suamico, Wis.), Meghan Lino (East Falmouth, Mass.) and Pam Wilson (Westminster, Colo.) finished the round robin with a 4-7 record for 11th place at The Peak in Stirling, Scotland.
After a strong win over Latvia this morning, the U.S. had a decent chance to avoid relegation and could possibly have finished as high as seventh place. But the stones didn’t go the Americans’ way late in the match against Dusan Pitonak’s Slovak team. Up 7-2, the U.S. would not score again as Slovakia took points in the last three ends to steal the win away.
With the victory, Slovakia (6-5) earned a berth in a qualification playoff against Scotland (7-4). Switzerland (6-5) and Korea (6-5) will meet in the other playoff. The winning teams will move on to take on China (8-3) and Norway (8-3) in Saturday’s semifinals.
Canada (5-6) and Germany (1-10) also were relegated to the B championship after their round robin performances placed them in 10th and 12th place, respectively. To follow the rest of the championship, go to
