USA sweeps past Russia at Winter World University Games

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – With two games left in the round robin, Andrew Stopera and Team USA are fighting for their playoff lives at the 2019 Winter World University Games in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

With six berths up for grabs, Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and teammates Luc Violette (Edmonds, Wash.), Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) and Graem Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) kept their spirits up with an 8-5 victory over host Russia today at Ivan Yarygin Sports Palace.

After the round robin concludes on Friday, the top six teams advance to Saturday’s playoffs. The top two teams will secure spots in the semifinals while the other four will compete in qualification playoffs to earn berths to the final four. The U.S. men will take on Korea (2-5) tomorrow morning and the Czech Republic (4-3) in the evening session to conclude the nine-game round robin. Scotland’s Ross Whyte and Switzerland’s Yannick Schwaller lead the pack with matching 5-2 records. The U.S. men are currently tied for seventh place at 3-4.

The game against Aleksandr Bystrov today was a tight one with the teams exchanging the lead until the U.S. took control of the game in the eighth end with a score of three. They followed up with single steals in the latter ends to secure their third win of the tournament.
